    World Cup 2026 teams

A record 48 national teams will compete at the 2026 World Cup — 16 more than the previous format. Teams represent all six FIFA confederations, with the tournament marking the first time every confederation has at least one guaranteed berth.

    Notable storylines

First-time qualifiers: Haiti, Cabo Verde, Curaçao and Bosnia will each make their men's World Cup debut. New Zealand earned Oceania's first-ever guaranteed berth.

Bracket separation: FIFA placed Spain and Argentina on opposite sides of the knockout bracket, along with France and England — meaning these four teams cannot meet until the semifinals at earliest.

Host nations: All three hosts — USA, Canada and Mexico — qualified automatically and will play all their group matches within their own country.

Intercontinental qualifiers: DR Congo return to the World Cup for the first time since 1974 (as Zaire), while Iraq end a 40-year absence dating back to 1986.
